For the first time ever, Sekolah Rendah (Tamil) Rajaji, a small Tamil primary school located behind the Sri Ambakarthur Patrakaliamman temple in Air Itam with an enrolment of just only 110 students, held it’s Sports Day at the City Stadium in George Town, Penang.

SJK (T) Rajaji got a RM2,000 boost during its Sports Day at the City Stadium in George Town, Penang.

The 69-year-old school, which is located on a small 300sq m plot in Air Itam, received the donation from a well-wisher, project manager Kong Poh Beng.

Kong handed over a cheque for the amount to head-master N.K. Chandra Segar in a simple ceremony witnessed by Air Itam assemblyman Wong Hon Wai.

“We can do a lot for the school with this money. I am grateful by the kind gesture,” Chandra Segar said.

Wong said the donation showed that kindness could cut across racial lines.

He had earlier officiated at the opening of the Sports Day and later gave out medals to the winners of the various events.

A total of 102 students and former students took part in the 39 events.

Chandra Segar said this was the first time the school’s Sports Day was held in a stadium.

“All the students are very excited,” he added.
